The Port of San Diego earned two awards from the Association of Environmental Professionals (AEP) San Diego Chapter for planning work that helps shape and protect San Diego Bay. The Port’s Sustainability and Innovation branch received the honors with peers from across Southern California.

“The Port is committed to environmental leadership and serving as a responsible community partner,” said Port of San Diego Chief Sustainability & Innovation Officer Jason Giffen. “This includes creating strategic, data-based plans that meet local, state, and federal standards. Locally, our team helps safeguard this coastal access by innovating and finding new methods to protect our waterfront for future generations.”

The Port’s Trust Lands Use Plan won in the “Outstanding Planning Document – Plan, Policy, or Ordinance” category. This plan is unique because it mostly focuses on 7,900 acres of submerged lands and water in San Diego Bay. The Trust Lands Use Plan is a result of a transparent and comprehensive outreach and engagement effort, with policies that support existing activities as well as promote new uses that balance the Public Trust, such as navigation, recreation, and environmental stewardship. The preparation of the Trust Lands Use Plan was supported by Nexus Planning & Research.

The AEP also recognized the Port’s Tidelands Avenue Electric Truck Hub as a finalist in the “Outstanding Environmental Analysis Document – EIR or EIS” category.

AEP San Diego is part of a nationwide nonprofit organization whose members focus on the built and natural environment. The chapter offers scholarships, career development events, and opportunities to promote environmental professions.

Building on these awards, the Port will continue protecting coastal access and strengthening the long-term resilience of its dynamic waterfront.
