Port of San Diego Marks 35th Anniversary of Sister Port Partnership with Sasebo, Japan

MC 10.13.17DukieMayor of SaseboThe Port of San Diego hosted a distinguished delegation from its sister port, the Port of Sasebo, Japan on October 13, 2017. The purpose of the visit was to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the sister port relationship.

A sister port agreement was signed between the two ports in August 1982. This agreement allows both ports to explore the possibilities of future collaboration and encourages the two ports to cross-promote business and cultural opportunities. Like San Diego, the Port of Sasebo has a large military presence, natural deepwater harbors, resort areas and cruise, shipbuilding and fishing industries.

The most recent delegation visit from the Port of Sasebo took place in 2012. The delegation visits have benefitted the two ports through information sharing and an enhanced understanding of each others culture.

Port of San Diego Approves Lease with The Brigantine, Inc. for Portside Pier Restaurant Development

On October 10, 2017, the Board of Port Commissioners approved a 40-year lease with The Brigantine, Inc. for its Portside Pier restaurant development at 1360 North Harbor Drive, one of Southern California’s flagship waterfront sites. The location is part of San Diego’s North Embarcadero.

The Brigantine, Inc. will invest more than $14 million to develop Portside Pier, a two-story structure over the water featuring four dining concepts. Portside Pier will offer fresh seafood at Brigantine on the Bay, authentic Mexican flavors at Miguel’s Cocina, pub fare at Ketch Grill & Taps, and walk-up service at Portside Gelato and Coffee. In addition to offering a variety of food options at different price points, Portside Pier will increase public access to the waterfront with a second level viewing deck, a second level perimeter walkway along the water’s edge and an extended dock and dine to accommodate up to twelve vessels.

Port of San Diego Awards Contract for Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal Redevelopment Project

The Port of San Diego has selected a local contractor to begin work on the first phase of the Port’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal Redevelopment Project.

At its October 10, 2017 meeting, the Board of Port Commissioners awarded a $12.3 million contract to Dick Miller, Inc. of San Marcos. It’s the first of three contract packages under Phase 1 of the redevelopment project, with work anticipated to begin in November and completion estimated for spring of 2020.

Board of Commissioners Approves Proclamation of October as Celebration of the Arts Month

Port of San Diego National Arts MonthIn support of National Arts and Humanities Month, the Port Board of Commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing the month of October as Celebration of the Arts Month at its regular monthly meeting on October 10, 2017.

Established in 2015 by the Obama Administration, National Arts and Humanities Month is the largest annual celebration for the arts and humanities in the nation. It demonstrates the rich cultural diversity found throughout America and calls upon U.S. citizens to observe this month with ceremonies and activities that celebrate the arts and humanities.
