Port of San Diego Recognized in SANDAG Diamond Awards with Platinum Tier Status for Fifth Consecutive Year

The Port of San Diego is celebrating yet another win. For the fifth consecutive year, the Port has earned Platinum-tier recognition in the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) annual Diamond Awards. The Diamond Awards honor employers that go the extra mile to support and encourage sustainable commuting. The Port earned the highest level of recognition, Platinum Tier, for its continuous efforts to reduce emissions within its workforce.

“The Port takes great pride in leading the way in emission reductions and our commuter program is just another way we work towards the improvement of our air quality and live out our mission and values,” said Chair Ann Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “We will continue to lead through our actions to show that environmental stewardship and economic vitality can coexist.”

The Port’s commuter program consists of the following:

  • A 100% commuter reimbursement program to offset the cost of commuting

  • Hybrid remote work arrangements that reduce vehicle trips

  • Commuter information in new hire packets

  • Showers/changing rooms to support biking and walking commuters

  • EV charging infrastructure for employees

Through its reimbursement program, the Port covers all out-of-pocket costs for employees who choose greener options like carpooling, vanpooling or public transit – including monthly bus, trolley and train passes. These efforts support the Port’s greenhouse gas reduction goals and its Climate Action Plan. In addition to the commuter program, the Port also participated in hosted activities for commuters, including Bike Anywhere Day events and Vanpool Lunch & Learn sessions. According to the Port's most recent commuter survey, only 68% of employees reported commuting alone, exceeding the SANDAG Diamond Award threshold of less than 80% single-occupancy vehicle use.

The 2026 award comes during Green Port Month, the Port’s annual celebration of its environmental milestones and forward-looking sustainability efforts.
