I am honored to serve as the acting Chief of the Port of San Diego Harbor Police. The Harbor Police protects and oversees the safety of our San Diego Bay waterfront – air, land and sea. This specialized force includes 146 sworn and 32 civilian employees committed to keeping San Diego Bay, the San Diego International Airport, and the surrounding areas safe for our community.
The Harbor Police Department is involved with all aspects of maritime public safety on San Diego Bay including speed enforcement, vessel accident investigations, marine firefighting, counter-smuggling, counter-terrorism, special events, and more. We also patrol the Port areas by vehicle, answering calls for police service and proactive crime fighting. There are special units such as the Investigations and Intelligence Unit, Explosive Detection Canine Team, Dive Team, Maritime Tactical Team, and others.
Harbor Police Officers work closely with the United States Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Transportation Security Administration, and other federal, state and local agencies.
With all of these specific responsibilities comes an immense amount of training and knowledge. I take great pride in knowing that our Harbor Police officers receive the most advanced and specialized training available, so that they can conduct their duties with the utmost professionalism and integrity.
The next time you, your friends, or family are visiting San Diego Bay, its waterfront parks and other areas, you can rest assured knowing that the Harbor Police Department is working hard to provide you with a safe and enjoyable visit.
