Port of San Diego Named “Public Agency of the Year” by the National Black Contractors Association

 Shirley Public Agency AwardThe Port of San Diego has been honored with a distinguished “Public Agency of the Year” award by the National Black Contractors Association. The award was presented at the Association’s construction industry summit, “Beyond the Dream,” held on February 21, 2018 at the National Black Contractors Association’s national office in San Diego.

The award is given to public entities that demonstrate a strong involvement with community-based organizations, and that provide educational programs and information regarding upcoming contracting opportunities. The Port was selected because of its commitment in assisting with the growth and development of emerging contractors and for its alliance with the Black Contractors Association of San Diego.

Port of San Diego Appoints Mark Stainbrook as Vice President of Public Safety/Harbor Police Chief

hpd chief mark stainbrook 2018The Port of San Diego is pleased to name Mark Stainbrook as its new Vice President of Public Safety/Harbor Police Chief, effective March 1, 2018.

Stainbrook has been serving in this role an acting capacity since October 2017 and previously served in an acting role for a year. He has been with the Department since November 2011.

As Vice President of Public Safety/ Harbor Police Chief, Stainbrook will oversee the Port of San Diego’s Harbor Police Department, Homeland Security and all Port security aspects. 

Harbor Police Dive Team Travels to Philippines to Train Local Maritime Law Enforcement Divers

HPD INL Philippines Training Evidence Tagging 2Members of the Port of San Diego Harbor Police dive team have recently returned from a training mission to Anilao Batangas, Philippines where they shared their expertise in underwater crime scene investigations with federal and local maritime law enforcement agencies. The training mission, from January 12-27, 2018, was made possible through a partnership established by Harbor Police in 2015 with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

“We’re proud to have opportunities to train, advise and mentor international law enforcement and security personnel to assist in global anti-crime efforts,” said acting Harbor Police Chief Mark Stainbrook. “Additionally, the relationships and networks our officers develop on missions like this help improve security and deter crime here at home, too.”

Port of San Diego Launches Study of Harbor Drive along San Diego’s Working Waterfront

Open House to be held February 21

harbor mm study base map 20180219To improve mobility and safety for all users of Harbor Drive, the Port of San Diego is conducting the Harbor Drive Multimodal Corridor Study. The study focuses on the mainly industrial area of Harbor Drive between the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal in San Diego and the National City Marine Terminal, known as San Diego’s Working Waterfront. It will examine how people use Harbor Drive along this stretch, address existing issues and challenges, and identify opportunities for improvement. It will also look at ways to enhance quality of life for everyone who lives, works and plays along the waterfront and in the surrounding communities.

Area residents, businesses, and all users of Harbor Drive are invited to provide input about their travel or commute experience on Harbor Drive. An Open House will take place on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Campus – San Diego Continuing Education, 1901 Main Street, San Diego, 92113.
