Port of San Diego Prepares to Add New Sand Along Kellogg Beach in September
Contact: Kelley Lieberman, 619.643.0154, klieberman@portofsandiego.org
The Port of San Diego is planning to place approximately 2,200 cubic yards of natural sand at Kellogg Beach in September to help maintain and protect the beach from natural erosion.
Kellogg Beach is a public beach located on the southwestern shoreline of the Shelter Island Yacht Basin in the Point Loma area. Since 1978, the Port has helped operate and maintain Kellogg Beach, which includes periodic sand replenishment.
Sand placement is expected to begin on September 8, and work is anticipated to be complete within three weeks. For public safety, beach access will be limited during construction hours on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Daily construction hours may vary due to weather and tidal conditions. Beachgoers should follow all posted signs, and the public can learn more about the project at portofsandiego.org/kellogg-beach.

-
What: Placement of 2,200 cubic yards of natural sand
-

The sand has been approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Port staff to ensure it meets all environmental requirements, matches current sand on the beach, and does not have any significant flaws that may impact a beachgoer’s experience, such as being too rocky.
During the May 6 Board meeting, the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners approved this project and contract award to Chula Vista-based contractor Montano Pipeline Inc. The project is budgeted as part of the Port’s Major Maintenance Program and is not paid for by tax dollars, as the Port does not collect taxes. The Major Maintenance Program sets aside funds for the maintenance of the lands and capital assets under the Port’s jurisdiction such as beaches, parks, piers and more.
Beginning September 3, the community may see some large equipment being moved as well as construction activity near and on Kellogg Beach as Montano Pipeline Inc. begins staging for the sand placement.
