The Port of San Diego will contribute $800,000 from its Maritime Industrial Impact Fund (MIIF) towards the City of San Diego’s Logan Heights Library Air Filtration Project. The total project cost is over $1.5 million. The Port created the MIIF to help mitigate the effects of maritime industrial activities on nearby communities, including Logan Heights. Funds from the MIIF will go towards retrofitting the library’s outdated HVAC system, creating a healthier environment for staff and visitors alike while improving the system’s energy consumption.
The Logan Heights Library is located near industrial operations and Port facilities, exposing people to elevated levels of air pollution. The library serves as a vital resource in this historically underserved neighborhood, providing educational and technological access for children, families, and seniors. It also serves as the only designated Cool Zone in the area, offering relief for nearby residents during extreme heat events.
“The Port of San Diego is deeply committed to being a responsible neighbor and environmental steward,” said Chair Danielle Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “This partnership with the City is a meaningful step toward cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more equitable San Diego. The Logan Heights Library is a vital gathering place, and we’re proud to support improvements that will serve residents for generations to come.”
“By moving from gas to electric power and adding advanced air filtration, this project is helping us reach our climate and sustainability goals—and it’s making life better for the people of Logan Heights,” Mayor Todd Gloria said. “Our partnership with the Port of San Diego shows what’s possible when we invest in community-focused projects that build healthier, more equitable neighborhoods and protect our environment for future generations of San Diegans.”
The Port of San Diego has long prioritized environmental sustainability, balancing its role as an economic engine with efforts to reduce emissions, protect public health, and enhance quality of life across the region. This investment reflects the Port’s ongoing mission to support cleaner, greener infrastructure especially in areas most impacted by maritime and industrial operations. The Logan Heights Library Air Filtration Project is just one of several projects the Port has supported through the MIIF. Other recent projects include:
