Bahia del Sol at the Big Bay Returns for a Second Year

Embarcadero Marina Park North on San Diego Bay will be a hub of activity in August as the Port of San Diego celebrates its second annual "Bahia del Sol at the Big Bay."

The program was created by the Port's Land Use Planning Department in October 2007 as a means to enliven Port parks. The Port provided patio furniture, Frisbees, and games such as giant chess and checkers. Specialty entertainment and interactive demonstrations were provided on certain dates.

Bahia del Sol proved to be a hit in 2007, so the Port decided to continue it for another year. The event will once again feature the giant chess and checker sets, patio seating, magazine library and board and lawn games from last year. In addition, there will be several classes offered, musical performances and crafts.

Bahia del Sol will run on Friday and Saturday, August 8 and 9; Thursday and Friday, August 14 and 15 and Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22. All activities and entertainment are free and will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the scheduled dates.

Children can participate in creating eco-friendly crafts, courtesy of the Rad Hatter on Friday, August 8, from 12-2 p.m. Interactive Environmental Education Sessions provided by WildCoast and the Resource Conservation District will be on August 8 and August 22.

If exercise is your inspiration, Champion Ballroom will be offering free Salsa and Waltz classes on August 9 and August 22 from 3-4:30 p.m. Yoga classes will be offered on August 14 and August 21 from 10-11:30 a.m. and Tai Chi classes will be offered on August 15 and August 22 from 10-11:30 a.m.

Not in the mood to exercise? Try your hand at one of the drumming sessions that will be offered on August 8 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and August 14 from 12-2 p.m.

Also taking place during Bahia del Sol will be the transformation of eight concrete picnic tables located in the park. The Port's Public Art Program sponsored a project that selected eight artists to transform these into artistic creations. The artists will be creating their designs on the picnic tables on August 8, 9, 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
