Tuesday, 29 July 2008
Children enjoyed the new "art playground" at Cesar Chavez Park on July 26 while Port and local officials dedicated the area that features interactive art elements, playful sculptures, a pelican boat that serves as a double slide, and a swing set.
The Port of San Diego hired Interplay Design of Vallejo to transform the park. Improvements include a water play system that allows children to operate a fountain that trickles through a sand sculpture, a rock climbing sculpture, decking, sidewalks and rubber surfacing for safe play. Throughout the sand area, artificial turtle eggs and fossils are buried for children to discover.

Tuesday, 08 July 2008
A commemorative sign that chronicles the history of tuna clippers and the 600 tuna fishermen called into service during World War II now graces the entrance of Tuna Harbor along the Embarcadero.
The vessels were used to transport troops, fuel and ammunition in areas that were inaccessible to naval warships. Prized for their refrigeration capabilities, the 52 clippers became the "errand boys of the Pacific" and also delivered fresh food, including turkeys and the trimmings for holiday meals, to the troops stationed in the Pacific theater.

The California Coastal Trail (CCT) is one of the great trails of our nation. Currently about half complete, when finished it will extend 1,200 miles along the coast from Oregon to Mexico. In 2005, an insignia to mark the trail was approved by the State Coastal Conservancy, and in 2007 Coastwalk and the Conservancy launched the CCT Signage Program. To date, approximately 85 miles have been signed with 250 emblems. On Saturday, May 31, the Port is adding to this legacy by teaming with Coastwalk and the State Coastal Conservancy to mark a portion of the trail in San Diego.
At 1 p.m., the agencies will be celebrating the unveiling of the first California Coastal Trail emblem in San Diego County. The event will take place in Cancer Survivors Park, Eastern end of Spanish Landing, North Harbor Drive.
