BMW Oracle Racing Team Honored Aboard USS Midway Museum

Officials from the Port of San Diego and the city of San Diego, along with the sailing community and proud fans gathered to celebrate the America's Cup Winning BMW Oracle Racing team on Sunday, February 21, 2010.
The BMW Victory Tour made a stop Sunday afternoon aboard the USS Midway Museum then sailed onto a private reception Sunday evening at the San Diego Yacht Club.
Port of San Diego's President and CEO Charles D. Wurster, along with Port Commissioner Lee Burdick, presented Larry Ellison, the financial backer for the team, with a proclamation honoring BMW Oracle Racing.

A brief window of opportunity to see the America's Cup trophy is coming to San Diego Bay.
The America's Cup will be on public display at the USS Midway Museum beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 21. The display of the silver cup, yachting's oldest and most coveted prize, is part of BMW ORACLE Racing's USA Victory Tour to welcome the cup home to the United States after a 15-year absence.
A public ceremony will follow aboard the USS Midway Museum at 5 p.m. that includes San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, representatives of BMW ORACLE Racing and local community leaders.

One of the best ways to enjoy the San Diego waterfront and learn about San Diego history won't cost you.
Starting Saturday, January 23, 2010, the Maritime Museum of San Diego is offering free, guided Historic Walking Tours along the North Embarcadero. The tours will be launched as part of the Big Bay Whale Days Festival. The free tours last approximately 45 minutes to an hour and are offered twice a day on weekends at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. They will be held through June 30, 2010.

The Port of San Diego manages and maintains public parks along San Diego Bay. Most of the parks are used for public activities including birthday parties, wedding ceremonies, picnics, family reunions and other outdoor activities.
To better serve the public, we are exploring the use of an online park permit reservation system. We would greatly appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to complete our short survey.

Thanks to a grassroots effort, the recreational boating community of Southern California will welcome back San Diego's annual Boat Show, now recognized as the Sunroad Boat Show. The event is taking place January 28 through January 31 at the Sunroad Resort Marina, located at 955 Harbor Island Drive on San Diego's Harbor Island.
After the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) announced the discontinuance of the city's 20-year tradition at the San Diego Convention Center last spring, the Sunroad Resort Marina offered to host the show under a brand new name, with a new look and location. Sunroad is one of the many Port tenants on San Diego Bay supporting recreational maritime.

San Diego is celebrating the migration of thousands of California gray whales with the second annual Big Bay Whale Days throughout the month of January.
Following the longest migration route of any mammal on Earth, gray whales make their way along San Diego's coastline every year from late December to early April. Their journey of nearly 13,000 miles roundtrip takes them from the Bering Sea, past the San Diego coast, to the protected warm waters off Baja California, Sonora and Sinoloa.

Saying the decision was made "regrettably," the San Diego Port Tenants Association announced this week that it is canceling this year's annual New Year's Eve Fireworks Show on San Diego Bay.

A rare winter treat continues to delight whale watchers off San Diego's coastline – repeated sightings of killer whale pods.
The Maritime Museum of San Diego said a tour group aboard Dennis Conner's famous sailing schooner "America" saw a pod of close to 20 Orcas. The latest sighting took place on Monday, December 21, just off the Coronado Islands.

Guests aboard the Hornblower Cruises and Events whale watching trip were recently treated to two rare views. On separate occasions, pods of Orca whales surfaced and made their way to the ship. They were close enough for guests to feel the mist coming from the whales’ blowholes.
