Whale Days Festival Coming to San Diego Bay

whaleWhale watching season has become one of San Diego's favorite times of the year. A free community event, designed to celebrate the giant mammals, as well as educate the public on their migration, will be held along San Diego's North Embarcadero.

The Big Bay Whale Days Festival is coming to the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, 1000 North Harbor Drive, on Saturday, January 21. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Along with 30 large balloon figures – more than any other parade – the event brings together marching bands, floats, and drill teams.

Two coral trees and a melaleuca tree will be removed. The two coral trees will be replaced with two new coral trees and staff will later decide whether to plant a new melaleuca tree or another type of tree in the park, all at Red Bull's expense.

DSC 8396The Port of San Diego has plans to enliven the San Diego Bay waterfront with diverse community events, ranging from concerts and dances to festivals and eco-tourism celebrations.

The Port's goal is to create a vibrant waterfront year-round that attracts residents and visitors to the bay front of its five member cities, and bring an economic boost to businesses located there.

The 40th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, featuring more than 80 vessels adorned with festive holiday light displays and decorations, kicks off Sunday, December 11, at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a second opportunity to view the parade on Sunday, December 18, also at 5:30 p.m.

acwsoracle1In gusty winds, U.S. team ORACLE Racing sailed to victory in the international America’s Cup World Series final fleet race held on San Diego Bay on Sunday, November 20, 2011.

ORACLE Racing, already winners of Saturday’s match racing competition, became the first team to sweep the global event with a double win, closing out nine days of top-flight sailing.

“The Port of San Diego and the San Diego region are pleased that San Diego is the first U.S. city to host this newest evolution in international sail boat racing,” said Port Commissioner Bob Nelson at an after-race press conference that included the skippers of all nine boats.

Emirates Team New Zealand Wins Port Cities Challenge in America’s Cup World Series

acws-sandiegoThe competition for the America's Cup World Series in San Diego starts today, Wednesday, November 16, and concludes on Sunday, November 20.

The races follow this past weekend's Port Cities Challenge, in which Emirates Team New Zealand won on Sunday, November 13, 2011. The Port Cities Challenge was the warm-up sailing races for this week’s America’s Cup World Series on San Diego Bay.

The Port Cities Challenge trophy—a stainless steel scale model of an AC45 catamaran under sail—was presented to winning skipper Dean Barker by Port Commissioners Lee Burdick and Dan Malcolm after last Sunday’s final race.

Port Cities Challenge trophyA British artist and welder has fashioned a sleek, stainless steel trophy that will be presented to the winner of this weekend's Port Cities Challenge sailing races.

The races are being held as part of the America's Cup World Series competition that begins Saturday, Nov. 12 on San Diego Bay.

Richard Vasey, who lives near Cornwall, England, created the trophy that resembles an AC45 catamaran sail boat. He fashioned the art piece by combining his welding skills, honed in the oil industry, with his artistic talents.

The America's Cup World Series sailing races kick off on San Diego Bay with the Port Cities Challenge on Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13. Six races – three each on Saturday and Sunday – will pair a racing team with one of the five Port District cities in a competition for bragging rights.

acwssetup5Boaters in San Diego Bay should be aware that the U.S. Coast Guard plans to enforce a safety zone during the America’s Cup World Series races, beginning November 11 through November 20.

The safety zone will be established to protect the public and the race participants while the boats compete on San Diego Bay, according to an advisory from the Coast Guard’s San Diego office.
