The path runs mostly along bike lanes or separated bike paths. It tours the shore of San Diego Bay and passes numerous attractions, parks and shopping opportunities.

The terrain is easy and the views are picturesque.

Start at the Broadway Pier on Harbor Drive and end with a ferry ride from Coronado back to the Broadway Pier (the fare is $3.50 with no charge for your bike).

The Bay Route Bikeway Steering Committee was formed by the County of San Diego, and the cities of Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, National City and San Diego. In 1989, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) established the Bayshore Bikeway Policy Advisory Committee (now the Bayshore Bikeway Working Group), which consists of an elected official from the County of San Diego and each of the five cities around the Bay, as well as Advisory Members from the Metropolitan Transit System, the Port of San Diego, and a representative of the region's bicycling community.
