Celebrate San Diego’s Military Heritage at the Sea & Air Parade

Marines logoSan Diego Bay will be the place for action this weekend as the Port of San Diego Sea & Air Parade kicks off the Red Bull Air Race World Series. It all begins this Saturday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m. as an awe-inspiring parade of military ships, aircraft and equipment sails on San Diego Bay from Point Loma to the G Street Mole area near Seaport Village.

Ships in the procession include a guided missile cruiser, a frigate, two guided missile destroyers and two amphibious dock landing ships. The Maritime Museum of San Diego’s two tall ships, the Californian and the HMS Surprise will participate and stage a mock gun battle.
The best places to view the action are Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Spanish Landing, the G Street Mole, the North Embarcadero area, the Coronado Ferry Landing and Centennial Park in Coronado. Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South will be closed for the Red Bull Air Race events.

The area along Harbor Drive will be busy and the Port of San Diego recommends carpooling or taking the bus or trolley. The San Diego Trolley One America Plaza stop and Seaport Village stop are located near viewing spots at the North Embarcadero and G Street Mole areas. The Port of San Diego and Metropolitan Transit System have arranged extra trolley service during May 3 and 4. For schedule information, visit www.sdmts.com.

The Port of San Diego is the title sponsor of the 2008 Sea and Air Parade and has been sponsoring the event since 1998. The parade is one of a series of events that are part of Fleet Week San Diego, an annual week-long celebration to commemorate San Diego’s military. The event is sponsored through the Port’s Fee for Service and Marketing Sponsorship Program, which allocates funding to programs and marketing sponsorships that contribute to the community by providing direct economic benefit to the Port, businesses on Port tidelands and the greater San Diego region.
