Labels: Press ReleasesNews

San Diego Marriott Post Marina Walk Concept, Figure 17The San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina, is planning a $182 million major remodeling that includes replacement of its main ballroom and exhibit hall.

The work will begin in early 2011 and is expected take up to 20 months to complete.

As part of the extensive renovation, the Port of San Diego has conducted a detailed review of the project and concluded the makeover will have no significant adverse impact on the environment. Several elements were examined, including the project’s impact on traffic and transportation, land use and air pollution.

The public may comment on the Port’s draft findings beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, through Oct. 7, 2010. The document is available for review at the Port of San Diego and the Downtown Library.

The 25-story Marriott, which is located on prime waterfront land at 333 West Harbor Drive (map) in downtown San Diego, is one of the city’s signature hotels. It is operated by Host Hotels & Resorts LP and features 1,305 rooms, 55 suites, dozens of meeting rooms and a 446-slip marina.

The makeover includes a new 40,000 square foot ballroom and a 40,000-square-foot exhibit hall. The new ballroom and exhibit hall would be constructed at the existing Marriott Hall conference building adjacent to Harbor Drive. There also are plans to construct an outdoor event area, a pedestrian promenade, and extensive landscaping improvements.

The Port District’s draft finding, called a mitigated negative declaration, is available at the office of the Port District Clerk, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101 (map). The draft may be viewed online and at the San Diego Downtown Central Library, 820 E St., San Diego CA 92101.

A CD copy of the draft findings may be obtained by contacting the Port District’s Land Use Planning Department at (619) 686-6283.

Comment letters stating specific environmental concerns with the Draft MND should be addressed to the San Diego Unified Port District, Attn: Wileen Manaois, Land Use Planning Department, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101.
