On Tuesday, May 31, 2011, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Harbor Police Department will participate in the Tip-A-Cop fundraiser to benefit the Special Olympics of San Diego. The fundraiser takes place at the Boathouse Restaurant on Harbor Island at 2040 Harbor Island Drive. (map)

Patrons will be served dinner by officers, dressed in full uniform, as they moonlight as waiters during the Tip-A-Cop fundraiser. The Harbor Police Department is among several law enforcement agencies hosting similar fundraisers around San Diego County.

The Harbor Police is the law enforcement arm of the Port of San Diego and has more than 130 sworn officers – all trained as firefighters and police officers.

“The general public, as well as employees of the Port, have always been very generous and supportive of this event in the past,” said Lt. James Jordan of the Harbor Police Department. “It is a good time and it’s definitely for a worthy cause. We will need the public’s help to make this fundraiser a success.”

Diners can enjoy a 20 percent discount off meals, however alcohol and desserts are not included in the discount. All tips are tax-deductible and support sports training and competition program for children and adults with disabilities.

“Tip-A-Cop events are one of the main fundraisers for the Law Enforcement Torch Run®, which is the largest grassroots fundraising event for Special Olympics Southern California, San Diego County,” said Teresa Contreras, volunteer manager with the Special Olympics.

“The Boathouse Restaurant and the Harbor Police have been supporters of Special Olympics for many years.”

Tip-A-Cop on the average along with other fun events held the same night, brings in approximately $8,000 for the cause.

All of the money raised benefits the athletes. The funds pay for year-round competitions, uniforms, practices and food for some 1,200 athletes.

“We thank the Boathouse for providing the opportunity and the officers for making the event happen,” said Contreras.
