thumb_DSC_0807The public will soon have a chance to see what the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge could look like bathed in artistic lighting. On Wednesday, June 9, 2010, two public meetings will be held to present the lighting concept proposals from three artist-led teams. A morning meeting will be held in Coronado from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Coronado Community Center Nautilus Room, 1845 Strand Way. An evening meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in San Diego at the Port of San Diego Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway (map).

In April 2008, the Port released an international call for artists seeking qualifications of artist-led teams interested in developing environmentally-friendly lighting concept proposals for the bridge. A selection panel comprised of experts in the fields of art, architecture, lighting and green energy selected three teams as finalists.

The three teams were selected based on their aesthetic vision, expertise in large-scale lighting projects and commitment to energy conservation. They are the Bideau Company of Ballan-Mire, France; the Peter Fink team of London, United Kingdom; and the Ned Kahn/Patrick McInerney Associates/ARUP of California.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has jurisdiction over the 2.12- mile bridge. The Port's public art program is funding phase one of the project, which includes selecting the artist-led team. The preliminary cost estimate of the project is between $4 and $5 million, which may be obtained through private sources, grants and fundraising. Once funding is secured, a feasibility study on the project will be conducted.

At the meetings on June 9, the three finalist teams will each present their proposals in a video presentation. Following the presentations, the public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. Videos of the three proposals can be viewed on the Port of San Diego website,

The San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Lighting project is a partnership between the Port of San Diego and Caltrans. The intent of the project is to create a signature artwork that illuminates the gently curving bridge connecting Coronado and San Diego. The project is geared to be a green project with energy-conserving elements and sustainable materials.
