Beginning Thanksgiving week, the Port of San Diego will be getting into the holiday spirit by making its Broadway Pier on the North Embarcadero a festive and welcoming location for residents and visitors.
Three oversized, sculptural letters spelling the word “JOY” will be installed at the entrance of the pier, along with an array of snowflake graphics. The “JOY” installation will be lit up at night, serving as both a daytime and nighttime feature for the holiday season.
Also on Broadway Pier, the public will be entertained with a series of pop-up artistic performances by local performance groups Culture Shock Dance Troupe, SACRA/PROFANA and transcenDANCE.
Culture Shock Dance Troupe is part of Culture Shock Dance Center, a premier urban dance training facility in San Diego. The non-profit organization is dedicated to innovative performance, artist development and community outreach. The center offers classes for all levels ranging from youth classes, beginning adult classes to professional level master classes.
SACRA/PROFANA is a choral group that strives to awaken and nurture enthusiasm for the choral art through vibrant performances and focused education outreach. They have performed with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, California Ballet and many other organizations. The group is celebrating its 10th Anniversary season with innovative choral programming, renewed collaborations with local and regional artists/groups, and community service.
transcenDANCE is a nationally-recognized creative youth development organization that works with teens in underserved San Diego communities to transcend barriers, expand their ambitions and create positive change for themselves, their families and communities, through dance and performance.
“The Port of San Diego is proud to sponsor these pop-up performances and the ‘JOY’ installation on Broadway Pier,” said Garry Bonelli, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. “These artistic performances and the ‘JOY’ installation will welcome everyone to Broadway Pier, activate the waterfront and celebrate the holiday season.”
The pop-up performances will occur December 1 through December 15, 2019. The “JOY” installation will remain on Broadway Pier until early January 2020.
