Port of San Diego Recognized with SANDAG Diamond Award for Sustainable Transportation Efforts

The Port of San Diego has been recognized by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) as a Platinum recipient in the annual SANDAG Diamond Awards program. The SANDAG Diamond Awards honors employers from across the San Diego region for their leadership in sustainable commuting. The award was presented at a ceremony held at the San Diego Central Downtown Library on October 21, 2022.

The Port received Platinum status, which is the highest level of recognition in the program, for being a host for Bike to Work Day on May 19, 2022 and for its overall commuter benefits program.

Participating in SANDAG’s annual Bike to Work Day is a favorite amongst Port employees and the community. The Port makes it a celebration, providing refreshments, healthy snacks and giveaways at its Bike to Work station.

“The Port of San Diego is honored to be recognized with a SANDAG Diamond Award for our alternative transportation efforts,” said Chairman Dan Malcolm, Board of Port Commissioners. “As environmental champions of San Diego Bay and the surrounding waterfront, we are committed to providing sustainable commuting opportunities for our employees. Also, events like Bike to Work Day promote community involvement and participation.”

Elements of the Port’s commuter benefits program include a hybrid remote work program, providing electric vehicle charging stations for employees, and a commuter reimbursement program. The Port reimburses employees 100 percent of out-of-pocket expenses incurred through participation in alternative transportation programs such as commuter carpool/vanpool services, or the purchase of monthly passes for bus, train, and/or trolley transportation.

The SANDAG Diamond Awards program is based on a points system tied to elements of an employer’s commuter program, its annual commuter events and activities, and shifts in employee transportation choices. Diamond Award employers help individuals get to work or school without adding traffic to the region’s roads and freeways, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve mobility.
