Port of San Diego to Gather Public Input on Future Planning for the Embarcadero

As part of the Port of San Diego’s Integrated Planning outreach, the public is invited to an Open House to discuss future planning for the Embarcadero area known as “San Diego’s front porch.” This event is one of a series of public events that began in 2017 to include public feedback in the discussion and drafting of the Port Master Plan Update (PMPU). Often referred to as “the future of the Port,” this agency-wide initiative will guide the future of approximately 6,000 acres of land and water within the Port’s jurisdiction along the San Diego Bay waterfront.
The Open House will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 6 p.m. at the Port of San Diego Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101.
Additionally, the Port encourages the public to complete a survey that will help guide priorities for future amenities in the Embarcadero area. The survey is available until January 31, 2019 at https://bit.ly/2PFoyfs.
The Embarcadero is where cruise ships dock and boasts landmarks including the USS Midway Museum, the Maritime Museum, Seaport Village, The Fish Market restaurant, The Headquarters, and others. In addition to its prominent place on the waterfront of downtown San Diego, the Embarcadero is a hub for the commercial fishing industry and its open-air seafood market, Tuna Harbor Dockside Market. The area is also home to the future Brigantine Portside Pier restaurant development, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2019.
The Port is seeking feedback on the public’s preferred uses for the Embarcadero, specifically the North and Central Embarcadero, because of the great interest both residents and visitors have in this highly visible area. The feedback will be used in developing policies within the PMPU, the culmination of the Port’s Integrated Planning initiative, which is currently being drafted.
Launched in 2013, Integrated Planning will ensure a holistic, thoughtful, and balanced approach to future land and water uses for generations to come, codified in a Port Master Plan Update. The Port has prioritized community outreach and engagement through numerous public events, stakeholder involvement opportunities and public meetings of the Board of Port Commissioners. In 2017, the Port hosted 12 public meetings of the Board of Port Commissioners and Open House events where members of the public and stakeholders engaged with Port staff and Commissioners on the goals and policy concepts. The workshops and award-winning outreach associated with this initiative continued in 2018 and into 2019, as several policy topics were noted for needing additional discussion and feedback.
