Free Waterfront Arts Event to be Hosted by the Port of San Diego on May 18

The Port of San Diego invites the public to enjoy “Picnic in the Park,” a free afternoon of art, activities and performances by the Wildside Band and the San Diego Dance Theater on Saturday, May 18, 2019. The event is being provided as a Port of San Diego Experience for the community at Cesar Chavez Park, the Port’s waterfront park in Barrio Logan.

“Picnic in the Park” details:

  • Saturday, May 18, 2019, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cesar Chavez Park, 1449 Cesar E. Chavez Parkway, San Diego, CA

This exciting, family-friendly waterfront activation event will feature musical performances by the Wildside Band, spanning a variety of genres including funk, R&B, disco, blues, and more. The San Diego Dance Theater will perform original choreographed dances inspired by the waterfront landscape. There will also be an interactive art project for all ages, a photobooth, giveaways and free refreshments. The public is encouraged to bring blankets and folding beach chairs. Some seating will be provided.  

This free event is part of the Port’s arts & cultural mission to create a vibrant waterfront with innovative public art, cultural programming, special events, and recreation opportunities that enhance the aesthetic and cultural richness of the Port’s neighboring communities. With a permanent collection of more than 70 artworks, more than 30 tenant-commissioned artworks, and a dynamic curatorial plan focused on contemporary public art exhibitions, there is something for everyone to experience around San Diego Bay.

The Wildside Band is a contemporary cover band comprised of six talented performers focusing on R&B, funk, hip-hop, Top 40, disco, and blues. The group members are San Diego natives and have performed in many venues throughout Southern California, Las Vegas, Arizona, and Palm Springs and bring tremendous energy to all their shows. 


Founded in 1972 as a 501(c)3 professional company, the San Diego Dance Theater (SDDT) has enriched the cultural life of San Diego through countless dance concerts and training for young dancers for the past 45 years. SDDT has a reputation as a company of fully-professional dancers committed to unconventional and deeply courageous programming which expands access to the stage for dancers of many nationalities, races, ages, and physical abilities. They are also known for cross-border projects, site-specific Trolley Dances, and summer dance workshops.
