Port to Begin Third Phase of Teledyne Ryan Site Demolition

Labels: Press ReleasesNews

"Aviation pioneer T Claude Ryan started the first regular commercial passenger service from San Diego to Los Angeles in the 1920s.The Port of San Diego will begin work on the third phase of the Teledyne Ryan demolition project on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. The project is located at 2701 North Harbor Drive, on the southeast edge of San Diego International Airport.

The third and final phase will complete the Port’s demolition work at the 46-acre site. Phase III will include the demolition and removal of concrete and asphalt slabs, structural foundations, below grade vaults, pits and utilities. In addition, the remaining 28,000-square-foot structure on the Teledyne Ryan site will be removed.

The area was once home to Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical, an aviation manufacturer that conducted operations there from approximately 1939 to 2002. The site is on Port of San Diego tidelands and is currently leased to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. Teledyne Ryan (TDY Industries Inc.) is also conducting a separate project to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater at the site.

The Port has administered the demolition project under a multi-phased approach using three separate contracts. The first phase of the project included the demolition and removal of about 50 structures covering almost one million square feet of building area. That initial phase began in February 2010 and was completed in February 2011. A small environmental testing phase comprised the second phase of the project, which was completed in October 2010.

The demolition work is being done as part of the Port's role as an environmental steward of San Diego Bay and its tidelands. Most materials to be removed from the site are considered contaminated and/or hazardous. Completion of the project will protect public health and the community and facilitate environmental cleanup of the soil by TDY Industries.

Miller Environmental Inc., an Anaheim, California- based company with experience in demolition and hazardous materials removal was awarded the contract for the project. The estimated cost for work in this phase is $11.9 million and all work is anticipated to be completed by the spring of 2012.

Upon completion of the demolition project, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority will continue to operate the site as provided for under its current lease agreement with the Port.
