Environmental Department Awards Three Employees with Environmental Accolades

Harbor Police Sergeant Gary Leeson, (left), and Craig Sweeting, Port Administration Building Maintenance Coordinator, General Services, received Employee Environmental Awards at the September 2 Board of Port Commissioners meeting. Dave Thompson (not pictured), Director of Procurement Services, also received an environmental award.

The Environmental Department presented three employees with environmental awards at the September 2 Board of Port Commissioners meeting. Harbor Police Sergeant Gary Leeson, building maintenance coordinator Craig Sweeting and Director of Procurement Services Dave Thompson were recognized for their environmental achievements.

   

Port Partners with Ridelink to Encourage Carpooling

The Port of San Diego has partnered with RideLink to help reduce the environmental impact of its employees’ commutes. For several years, the Port has encouraged employees to use public transportation such as the bus and the trolley, and has provided preferred parking spaces for employees who carpool. The Port’s recent partnership with RideLink will strengthen the Port’s efforts by providing strategies and effective options to driving alone to work.

   

Bay Clean-up a Sweeping Success

Large heavy equipment tires, seaweed-covered grocery carts, traffic signs and other debris was removed from San Diego Bay on June 7 during the 18th annual Operation Clean Sweep. One of California's largest environmental events, this year volunteers filled ten 40-yard dumpsters with collected debris from San Diego Bay.

The popular event focused on the Chula Vista Marina, Cesar Chavez Park, Embarcadero Marina Park North, National City Marine Terminal and Chollas Creek. Operation Clean Sweep was produced in partnership by the Port of San Diego, San Diego Port Tenants Association, U.S. Navy and San Diego Gas & Electric.

   

Port Gears up to Launch Clean Truck Program [UPDATE]

The Port of San Diego is asking truck owners who do business at the Port's Tenth Avenue and National City Marine Terminals if they would be willing to participate in a program to reduce air emissions. Letters were recently sent out to 364 truck owners informing them of the program that would help pay for truck retrofitting or replacement.

Workers prepare to dismantle Neptune's Place, which has been stuck for years in shallow water off the Chula Vista bay front.An abandoned party boat, Neptune's Place, which has been stuck in shallow water off the Chula Vista bay front has finally been towed away.

Workers from Marine Group Boat Works removed the vessel and towed it to the company's boat yard during an early morning high tide on Tuesday, June 3. The 120-foot boat has been stuck in South San Diego Bay since 2003, when it blew off its moorings during a storm. Since then, the abandoned boat, considered an environmental hazard, has remained in the shallow water.
