Alternative method for powering cruise ships in port will reduce air emissions
In February 2008, the Port of San Diego's Draft Clean Air Program was presented to the Board of Port Commissioners. The program identified four methods of reducing air emissions around the Port tidelands. These are: retrofitting or replacing older model trucks that do business at the Port, retrofitting or replacing cargo handling equipment used at the Port's marine terminals, requiring ships to plug into shore power while berthed and reducing the speed of vessels traveling to and from the Port.

The Board of Port Commissioners has approved funding for ten new environmental projects. The projects were recommended for funding through the Port's environmental committee and received final approval by the Board at the October 7 Board of Port Commissioners meeting.
This is the seventh round of environmental projects approved since the Port's Environmental Policy was approved in June 2006. The policy calls for funding and decision making direction to select and execute projects that would improve the condition of San Diego Bay and its surrounding tidelands.

The drop-off point was located in the Port administration building employee parking lot, allowing Port employees to conveniently recycle personal equipment as they arrived at the office.
"Everyone who dropped off equipment said they were glad to get rid of the devices in an environmentally safe way," said Larry McCauley, Assistant Environmental Specialist and organizer of the event.
