Proposed Port Master Plan Amendment for San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina Completed

Labels: Press ReleasesNews

MarriottThe San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina is proposing a major renovation of its meeting facilities to meet demands for space, flexibility and design.

The Board of Port Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the renovation proposal at its monthly meeting on December 13 at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Board Room of the Port District's Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway in San Diego.

The hotel, located at 333 West Harbor Drive in San Diego, proposes the following changes:

  • Renovation and expansion of Marriott Hall's meeting space allowing the Marriott to book more group meetings.
  • Removal and relocation of two existing mechanical cooling towers.
  • Construction of a 50-foot-wide landscaped public walkway known as Marina Walk. The walkway would improve public access to the South Embarcadero waterfront from Harbor Drive and the adjacent downtown residential community.
  • Construction of a 25,000 square-foot outdoor event area.

The project does not involve an increase in the number of hotel rooms or any in-water work at the Marriott Marina.

The public is encouraged to review the draft Port Master Plan Amendment document and submit testimony for the Board of Port Commissioners to consider prior to the hearing.

Written information should be submitted to the attention of the District Clerk, San Diego Unified Port District, P.O. Box 120488, San Diego, CA 92112-0488.

The final Environmental Impact Report for the project will also be presented to the Board of Port Commissioners for certification at its December 13 meeting.

The project is anticipated to go before the California Coastal Commission for certification of the Port Master Plan Amendment in mid-2012. If all approvals are met, construction could begin in 2012.

The Port of San Diego was created by the state legislature in 1962 and is responsible for $1.7 billion in public improvements in its five member cities: Imperial Beach, San Diego, Coronado, Chula Vista and National City.

The Port oversees two maritime cargo terminals, two cruise ship terminals, 17 public parks, the Harbor Police Department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub tenant businesses around San Diego Bay.
