Coastal Trail emblem marks statewide Coastal Trail

The California Coastal Trail (CCT) is one of the great trails of our nation. Currently about half complete, when finished it will extend 1,200 miles along the coast from Oregon to Mexico. In 2005, an insignia to mark the trail was approved by the State Coastal Conservancy, and in 2007 Coastwalk and the Conservancy launched the CCT Signage Program. To date, approximately 85 miles have been signed with 250 emblems. On Saturday, May 31, the Port is adding to this legacy by teaming with Coastwalk and the State Coastal Conservancy to mark a portion of the trail in San Diego.

At 1 p.m., the agencies will be celebrating the unveiling of the first California Coastal Trail emblem in San Diego County.  The event will take place in Cancer Survivors Park, Eastern end of Spanish Landing, North Harbor Drive.

Marking the CCT with signage at Spanish Landing Park is a joint undertaking of the Port of San Diego, Coastwalk, and the Coastal Conservancy.  The portion of the CCT lined with signs at Cancer Survivors Park is the first of several segments to be marked at Spanish Landing.  The unveiling celebration is scheduled to coincide with the annual Trails and Greenways Conference to be held in San Diego, May 29-31, 2008. 

The Port of San Diego is the first California port to delineate the Coastal Trail with signage.  Identifying the CCT will improve visibility and public access to the San Diego bayfront for its citizens and visitors, consistent with the public access policies incorporated into the Port Master Plan.

"The Port of San Diego's participation in the signing program is a great step forward for the Coastal Trail—one that we hope to see followed by all commercial ports on our beautiful coast," said Sam Schuchat, executive officer of the Coastal Conservancy.

Future signing events are planned in the following counties: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, San Francisco, Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt, Del Norte.
