Enjoy the Entertainment and Fun At Chula Vista’s “Night by the Bay”
A free nighttime festival of culture, cuisine and cinema is coming to the Chula Vista bay front, and you're invited.
Mark your calendars for Friday evening, June 22, 2012, and the Port of San Diego's "Night by the Bay" in Chula Vista Bayside Park. The festival will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. with multiple performance areas, a nighttime cinema, food from popular mobile restaurants, displays by local artists and buskers entertaining throughout the waterfront park.
"I know there are a lot of people who haven't visited this community, which offers so many attractions and activities," said Ann Moore, who represents the City of Chula Vista on the Board of Port Commissioners. "Our 'Night by the Bay' is a wonderful opportunity to make that visit and enjoy some nighttime music, fun and food."
Jazz and Latin music and a New Orleans-style brass band like you might hear in "The Big Easy" will make you feel like dancing.
Featured musicians include the B-Side Players, which incorporates the sounds of Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil and Puerto Rico with some 70's rock, reggae, jazz and hi-hop; the Euphoria Brass Band with its New Orleans-style beat; and pianist and composer Danny Green will play some of his Brazilian and Latin jazz mixed with classical sounds. In addition, there will be a short concert of didgeridoo and West African kora music by Mitchell Walker and Alfusainey Suso.
For your viewing pleasure, there will be a nighttime cinema with a film that will be announced later, and there will be performances by circus-style entertainers.
More than 40 art works will be on display as part of the Summer Solstice Artists Exhibition by the South Bayfront Artists, a nonprofit artist collaborative, which encourages the development of arts in the region.
The artists' works include fine art covering various media such as photography, oils, acrylics, watercolors, jewelry, quilting and more. Many of the artists will be at the event or at the artists' gallery located between the Gallery At the Marina and the Chula Vista Marina office.
You also can enjoy some of the fare from popular mobile restaurants, including Sweet Treats ice cream and dessert truck, Tabe BBQ, Two for the Road, Asian Persuasion Food Truck & Catering and Curiocity Catering, which specializes in fresh and organic food from local farms.
The Night by the Bay is part of an effort by the Port of San Diego to enliven the San Diego Bay waterfront with diverse community events, ranging from concerts and dances to festivals, fitness clinics and eco-tourism celebrations. The goal is to create a vibrant waterfront that offers year-round activities for residents and visitors of the region to enjoy the five Port cities and their parks and open spaces along San Diego Bay and the Imperial Beach oceanfront.
About the Port:
The Port of San Diego is the fourth largest of the 11 ports in California. It was created by the state legislature in 1962. Since then, it has invested millions of dollars in public improvements in its five member cities – Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego.
The Port oversees two maritime cargo terminals, two cruise ship terminals, 17 public parks, the Harbor Police Department, and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub tenant businesses around San Diego Bay.
The Port of San Diego is an economic engine, an environmental steward of San Diego Bay and the surrounding tidelands, and a provider of community services and public safety.
