Free Ballroom Dancing, Yoga and Tai Chi Classes offered at Bahia del Sol at the Big Bay

Final two weeks of activities scheduled for this year's event

Bahia del Sol at the Big BayBallroom dancing, yoga and Tai Chi are just some of the activities planned for the final two weeks of Bahia del Sol at the Big Bay. The event, sponsored by the Port of San Diego, takes place in Embarcadero Marina Park North on San Diego Bay. Specially scheduled activities will be offered, free of charge, on August 14-15, and August 21-22.

Bahia del Sol at the Big Bay opened up last Friday for its second year with a special exhibit by artists who were selected by the Port's Public Art Committee to transform eight plain, concrete picnic tables and seats into works of art. Some will feature mosaic tile designs and others incorporate images related to the San Diego lifestyle. The Port encourages the public to watch the artists continue to transform the tables into art on August 14 and 15. The finished products will remain on display in the park and the public is welcome to use them to dine at, or just sit and relax.

Bahia del Sol had the entire park dancing this past Saturday with the free Salsa dance class. Children had fun creating eco-friendly crafts with the Rad Hatter. In the coming weeks, more free classes varying from yoga and Tai Chi, to waltz and drumming will take place at the park. In addition to the classes and musical entertainment, the Port of San Diego has brought in giant chess and checker sets, patio seating and board and lawn games.

Here is the schedule of free activities and classes:

  • Bay View Yoga Classes by Michelle Patchen: August 14 and 21, 10 - 11:30 a.m.
  • Dance instruction (waltz) by Champion Ballroom: August 22, 3 - 4:30 p.m.
  • Tai Chi Classes by Master Henry Cheng, August 15 and 22, 10 - 11:30 a.m.
  • Drumming Session: August 14, 12 - 2 p.m.
  • Interactive Environmental Education Sessions with WILDCOAST and Resource Conservation District: August 22, 1 - 3 p.m.
  • Art Picnic Table Transformations: August 14 and 15, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Bahia del Sol was created by the Port's Land Use Planning Department in October 2007 as a means to enliven Port parks. The event was well received, so the Port decided to continue it for 2008. All programs will take place in Embarcadero Marina Park North, which is located on the waterfront in San Diego. For more information on this program, click here.
