"Art Playground" Opens at Cesar Chavez Park

Children play near a turtle sculpture at the new playground at Cesar Chavez Park

Children enjoyed the new "art playground" at Cesar Chavez Park on July 26 while Port and local officials dedicated the area that features interactive art elements, playful sculptures, a pelican boat that serves as a double slide, and a swing set.

The Port of San Diego hired Interplay Design of Vallejo to transform the park. Improvements include a water play system that allows children to operate a fountain that trickles through a sand sculpture, a rock climbing sculpture, decking, sidewalks and rubber surfacing for safe play. Throughout the sand area, artificial turtle eggs and fossils are buried for children to discover.

The Port built the park in 1990, which is popular with soccer leagues and families from Barrio Logan.

Assembly member Mary Salas, Councilmember Ben Hueso and Port of San Diego Chairman, Mike Bixler cut the ribbon and open up Ocean Circle Art Playground.Marissa Kanoya scoops sand at Ocean Circle Art Playground. The Jackstraws perform at the Ocean Circle Art Playground dedcation.
