The North Embarcadero area in San Diego will be bustling with fun-filled activities this Labor Day weekend.

U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge & 3D Art Expo

sandThe excitement starts Friday, August 29, 2014 at the opening day of the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge & 3D Art Expo on the Port of San Diego's B Street Pier.

International sand sculptors will create works of art along an urban setting on beautiful San Diego Bay. All active duty military receive free admission on August 29 and can bring up to three family members each with free admission.

The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Expo continues through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. Hours for each day are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday evening, the event's beer garden will remain open until 9 p.m.

Port of San Diego and City of Imperial Beach Celebrate Completion of Pier Refurbishment Project

malcolmaddressingcrowdat IB pierThe Port of San Diego and the City of Imperial Beach celebrated the completion of a project that refurbished the deck of the Imperial Beach Pier on May 20, 2014. The project entailed replacing nearly 1,500 planks, most weighing 250 pounds. Approximately 35,000 spikes were used to anchor the new planks.

Jim Janney, Mayor of Imperial Beach, joined Board of Port Commissioners Vice Chairman Dan Malcolm in a "Final Nail" ceremony. They marked the project's completion by driving the final two spikes into the pier.
