Incident Type: Life Saved At San Diego International Airport

Incident Date/Time: July 29, 2007

Location: San Diego International Airport

Case #: 07- 5152

Prepared by: Lieutenant John Forsythe

On Sunday, July 29th, Harbor Police responded to a call at Checkpoint one, terminal one at the San Diego International Airport. When Officer Joey DeGuzman and Corporal Adam Miles arrived on scene, they saw a woman on the ground outside Karl Strauss restaurant with two people already administering CPR to the victim; the woman was unconscious and barely breathing.

Harbor Police commenced resuscitation using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which delivered one shock, while the two Samaritans, who we later learned were two off-duty nurses, continued compressions and breathing. Harbor Police and the off-duty nurses alternated CPR until Medic 63 arrived on scene seven minutes later. Medic 63 took the victim to UCSD Hospital, where life saving efforts continued.

There, the 58 year old woman was stabilized and is now recovering. The AED program at San Diego International Airport has earned national recognition for the number of lives the program has saved. The program is managed by San Diego Project Heartbeat.
