Family Fun at Maritime Museum’s Spring Sailor Days [Updated]
Contact: Barbara Moreno
The historic Star of India and all other ships within the Maritime Museum of San Diego's collection will offer hands-on activities designed to give sailing enthusiasts a taste of maritime life this spring.
Everyday from Sunday, March 21, through Sunday, April 18, adults and children can make rope for sailing, move cargo around the decks, raise and lower the huge sails, tie sailor's knots, climb through a steam engine and much more.
"The interactive activities of Sailor Days are purely educational," said Robyn Gallant, director of marketing for the Maritime Museum. "Participants will bring history to life as they reenact the duties of any sailor, as they would have done when the ships were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Children are also invited to take part in an educational scavenger hunt through the ships, in search for historic maritime facts and rewarded with a prize from the museum's treasure chest.
All activities are included with regular admission prices – $14 for adults and $8 for children. However, tickets purchased online with the Discovery Package will include a one-hour historic boat cruise around the bay on the San Diego Harbor Pilot. Tickets may be purchased at the gate as well, and rides on the Pilot can be added to regular admission for only $3 more.
The museum is located on the North Embarcadero in downtown San Diego at 1492 North Harbor Drive. For more information, call 619-234-9153 ext. 101 or visit the Maritime Museum's website at www.sdmaritime.org.
