TDY Project Description

The project located at 2701 North Harbor Drive, is being administered by the Port of San Diego. The project advances the goals articulated in the Port District's mission statement: "While protecting the Tidelands Trust resources, the Port will balance economic benefits, community services, environmental stewardship, and public safety on behalf of the citizens of California."

The TDY site is a 46-acre parcel upon which aviation manufacturing operations were conducted from approximately 1939 to 2002 by the former tenant, TDY (also known as Allegheny Industries). The majority of buildings and structures on the site have been determined to be contaminated and/or potentially contaminated with hazardous materials and wastes. The Project will allow for the removal and disposal of contaminated building materials in compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Implementation of the project involves removal of approximately 50 structures.

The Port is taking action to preserve the history of the Ryan Aeronautical Company through photo-recordation, salvage of architectural materials and creation of an interpretive display or website. Selected architectural materials will be made available for donation to museums, archives, non-profit organizations and the general public prior to demolition. Priority will be given to entities which have the potential to offer the greatest long-term benefit and preservation opportunities for highlighting the history of the Ryan Aeronautical Company. Parties interested in obtaining architectural materials must submit a Statement of Interest form.
