Artist's comments:
San Diego is rich with sun, agricultural land and history. These elements all contribute to its identity and "sense of place". Its people and neighborhoods make San Diego a place for prosperity and growth, as well as a retreat for people who visit from other cities. The newly built terminal has made the airport a hub for travel, domestic and international. The airport is the first and last thing that people see when they arrive or depart from the city; therefore, I am creating a gateway to serve as a strong visual statement identifying the arrival and departure to and from San Diego. An artwork as a defining entrance piece to the City would add to the sense of vitality and reinforce San Diego as a center for activity....As an artist and professor who lives and works in San Diego, I appreciate the efforts of the Port of San Diego for making public art accessible to our community.
