Chicano Park Murals

Artist: Various Artists
Location: National Ave. at Crosby St.
On support structures of the Coronado Bay Bridge
Painted murals.
Adjacent to tidelands in Barrio Logan.

Chicano Park started to develop in Logan Heights in 1970 on land that had been cleared for construction of the approach ramps for the Coronado Bridge. Since 1973 local artists and artists from other southwest cities have created a remarkable collection of murals, or wall-art, on the massive concrete pillars supporting the overhead roadways. The park now contains over forty murals, which mostly celebrate Chicano themes such as: farm workers, bilingual education, immigration, police brutality, the downfall of Allende, role models in history, indigenous art history, and boycotts of Coors, Gallo and lettuce. While not a Port-commissioned public art project, these murals are indeed colorful neighbors to adjacent Port tidelands property and are a great source of pride to the local Chicano community. Well worth a visit.
