Home Public Art Public Art Policies

The Board of Port Commissioners (BPC) has adopted three distinct yet related policies governing the operation of the Port's Public Art Program and affecting public art activities within the tideland trust properties of the Port of San Diego. Each policy is briefly described below, and links are provided to view and download each one in PDF format.

BPC Policy 609 - Port Public Art Program

This policy establishes a public art program for the Port of San Diego and describes its administration and methods of funding. It sets forth guidelines for the appointment and operation of the Public Art Committee and for the selection of public artworks. It presents the formal procedures used by Port officials to evaluate public art proposals and the business relationships with artists, developers and other public art partners. A glossary of public art related terms is provided.

BPC Policy 610 - Monuments, Memorials & Plaques

This policy states the Port's interest and intent for hosting monuments, memorials and plaques intended to honor specific individuals, organizations or events. The policy provides definitions for appropriate honors and describes the selection criteria used by the Public Art Committee and the Board. The selection criteria give preference to those honors that have broad meaning and significance for the community.

BPC Policy 611 - Donated/Loaned Items Policy

This policy presents the methods for reviewing and acquiring offers for donated items. The policy is linked to each of the other policies by its focus on public artwork and the aesthetic development of the tidelands.
