Home Public Art About the Public Art Program

A community-based Public Art Program was created to promote a healthy, vibrant atmosphere that contributes to the quality and identity of the region. Public art programs are inspired by a variety of goals including: encouraging artistic expression, inspiring a sense of civic pride, addressing social issues and integrating the arts into a community partnership process. Various art projects can be found in public spaces on each member city's tidelands and the shoreline of San Diego Bay. These projects celebrate San Diego's international ties, cultural diversity, military significance and unique oceanfront environment.

Artists bring a unique perspective to design development.Their participation provides an aesthetic balance to capital improvement projects. They help create memorable spaces for businesses, residents and tourists. Enhancing the character of communities through Public Art directly supports cultural tourism and economic development.

The mission of the Public Art Program is to enhance The Port of San Diego’s public image through community development programs that anticipate and meet aesthetic integration through art projects with the Trust Cities, Port departments and District staff.
