Open House to Showcase Artist Concept for America’s Cup Harbor Parking Facility
Friday, 25 March 2011
Contact: Marguerite Elicone (619) 686-6222
The public will have a chance to see how public art can transform an ordinary parking garage into a showpiece.
On Thursday, April 7, 2011, artist Suikang Zhao will present his concept for art that will be integrated into the design of the America’s Cup Harbor Parking Facility on Shelter Island. An open house will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Commodore Room at the Bay Club Hotel and Marina, 2131 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego.
The America’s Cup Harbor Parking Facility will be a four-story facility with room for 400 vehicles, located on the east side of North Harbor Drive, across the street from the Point Loma Marina. The project is still in the design phase, but is anticipated to begin construction in fall 2011. Construction should take just under a year to complete.
Zhao was selected through an open competition and awarded the agreement for design, fabrication and installation of public artwork for the parking facility. His concept will complement the design of the structure and will include a sculptural element inspired by the movement of sails and the reflection of light.
Zhao’s talent for turning public buildings into works of art can be witnessed throughout the United States. He created the “Winds of Aphrodite” at the Kansas City Bartle Hall Convention Center and artworks at the Marriott Library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Other projects by Zhao are installed at the University of Oregon Health and Counseling Center in Eugene, Oregon, and at three of Valley Metro’s light rail stations in Phoenix, Arizona. Zhao has also exhibited his work at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Lehman College Art Gallery, Frederieke Taylor Gallery and the Bronx Museum, all in New York.
