Public Invited to Meet Artist Selected for America’s Cup Harbor Public Art Project
Friday, 12 November 2010
Contact: Marguerite Elicone (619) 686-6222
The Port of San Diego will be hosting an open house event from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, to give the public an opportunity to meet the artist selected to develop artwork to be integrated into the America's Cup Harbor parking facility design. The open house will be in the training room of the Port of San Diego Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway (map).
In August 2010, a selection panel recommended that artist Suikang Zhao be awarded the agreement for design, fabrication and installation of public artwork for the America's Cup Harbor parking facility. Zhao, who lives in New York City, has designed and installed several permanent public art commissions. His recent artworks include the architectural sculpture, "Winds of Aphrodite" at the Kansas City Bartle Hall Convention Center, and artworks at the Marriott Library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, the Oregon State University Health and Counseling Center in Eugene, Oregon, and artworks for three of Valley Metro's light rail stations in Phoenix, Arizona.
Zhao has also exhibited his work at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Lehman College Art Gallery, Frederieke Taylor Gallery and the Bronx Museum, all in New York.
At the open house, the public can view images of Zhao's previous work and learn more about the public art project.
The America's Cup Harbor parking facility will be located on the east side of North Harbor Drive, across the street from the Point Loma Marina. The project is still in the design phase, but is anticipated to begin construction in June 2011. Construction should take just under a year to complete.
