Port of San Diego Issues Call to Artists for Urban Trees 7

The Port of San Diego has issued a Call to Artists (Request for Proposals) for a seventh Urban Trees sculptural artwork exhibit for the North Embarcadero area of San Diego's downtown waterfront. The Port of San Diego is issuing a call to artists to propose creations for a seventh Urban Trees sculptural artwork exhibit for the North Embarcadero area of San Diego's downtown waterfront.

The new exhibit is to be called "Urban Trees 7."

"We’re delighted to be embarking on our seventh Urban Trees exhibition,” said Yvonne Wise, Port of San Diego’s Public Art Director. “It’s always so exciting for us every year to see the artists’ submissions coming in and how varied and creative they continue to be. We’ve had a great run with this program and we’re really looking forward to making this a truly grand finale.”

Up to 30 artists (or artist teams) will be selected to create original sculptural artworks for display in Urban Trees 7 along Harbor Drive between the "B" Street Cruise Ship Terminal and Hawthorn Street. Please download the Call for Artists brochure (in PDF format) for detailed information regarding the exhibit and submittal requirements.

If you have specific application questions, please call (619) 686-7246.

Submittals must be received by the Port's Public Art Department no later than 5:00 p.m. (PDT) on Monday, May 3, 2010.

The Port's Public Art Program conceived this temporary exhibit to punctuate and activate the postcard views of San Diego Bay and invite people to stroll along and enjoy the pedestrian promenade. Artists were invited to apply their creative energies to the design of artistic “trees” — the artworks that are mounted in planter containers — to add color, form, interest and fun to the waterfront.

The current exhibit, Urban Trees 6, features 30 works of art, which range from serious to lighthearted, whimsical to abstract. What many have in common is that they are kinetic, attracting attention as they move with the wind. They will be on display through September 2010.

All of the artworks from past exhibits are available for purchase. Interested buyers can contact the Port of San Diego's Public Art Department, at 619-686-7246. The department will put the potential buyer in touch with the artist. The Port does not have any involvement in the sale or price negotiations, nor does it receive any percentage of the sale.
