Port Art Showcased in Nationwide Publication

The Port’s Urban Trees exhibit is featured in “American ArtParades,” a recently published 200-page hardcover art book. “American ArtParades” is published annually and is a photographic chronicle of public art exhibitions from 45 cities across the United States. “American ArtParades” goes behind the scenes to capture the vision of community art projects. The community art project trend began in the summer of 1999 with “Cows on Parade™ in Chicago.” This exhibition featured over 300 life-sized fiberglass cows, hand-painted by local artists, which were found grazing in the parks and lounging on sidewalks throughout Chicago.

Iconic sculpture was the first installation of the Port’s Public Art Program in 1996

What: Reinstallation and rededication of the Wyland sculpture, “Ocean Riders.” The sculpture was the Port of San Diego Public Art Program’s first art installation and has been a mainstay on the Imperial Beach oceanfront since 1996. It was removed last summer to be refurbished.

   

Port of San Diego to Feature World-Class Art

The San Diego Unified Port District and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture are welcoming two contemporary art installations on loan from Vancouver where they have been on display to critical acclaim for two years. Dennis Oppenheim’s “Engagement” will be on exhibit by the end of this week, Nov. 11-17, and Magdalena Abakanowicz’s “Walking Figures” will be installed after Thanksgiving.

“Engagement,” a large-scale sculpture by noted artist Dennis Oppenheim, will be on display near the water front by the end this week, Nov. 11-17. Oppenheim is recognized as one of the foremost conceptual artists and sculptors in the world today. His work has been included in both the Venice Biennale and the Johannesburg Biennale and he recently was recognized for Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale. Oppenheim’s conceptual work initially was introduced through film and video in the 1970s. The New York-based artist has exhibited throughout the world, including works featured in the Tate Gallery in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York.
