Home Palm Avenue Street End Project

aerial view of the Imperial Beach street-end projectThe Palm Avenue Street End Project reconfigured the street end of Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach. A semi-circular public overlook was created, providing a park-like setting for ocean viewing. The area has been enhanced with colored concrete pavers, benches, landscaping and lighting. The site is also home to an 18-foot tall sculpture titled, “The Spirit of Imperial Beach.” Traffic improvements resulting from the project include a new turnaround at Ocean Lane which allows for two-way traffic and improved street parking. A storm water pump station with a built-in pollution diversion system was also installed to reduce or prevent urban runoff from entering the beach.

Another important feature of this project was the installation of ramps from the street end to the beach, allowing direct access for the public. The project also established year-round lateral beach access for individuals with disabilities and access for emergency vehicles. In addition, a seawall was constructed to protect the new street end. Reyes Construction was the contractor. The $3.0 million project was completed in January of 2009.
