Home National City

National City's Pier 32, the first marina to be built on San Diego Bay in more than 15 years, is open for business.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony signaling the grand opening of the 250-slip marina and dedication of a public artwork were held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, along the Sweetwater Channel near Pepper Park. With a boat launch ramp, public fishing pier, public art and children's playground, Pepper Park remains a recreational haven for families, boaters and fishermen.

Over the last decade, the National City bayfront has undergone a dramatic transformation. To enhance the entrance to the National City waterfront, the Port extended Marina Way which leads to the new marina and Aquatic Center.

Also in the area, the Port in 1999 opened the historic railcar plaza to showcase the 112-year-old restored railcar from the original 10-car "Motor Cannon Ball" excursion train. The rail car and plaza demonstrate National City's historic role in rail transportation.

Today, thousands of imported automobiles depart the 125-acre National City Marine Terminal via rail for distribution throughout the western United States. This busy terminal, a key component of the Working Waterfront on San Diego Bay, is home to Pasha Automotive Services. One of the Port's largest tenants in the South Bay, Pasha Services operates the most advanced, full service vehicle import/export facility with on-dock rail facilities on the West Coast. In support of this thriving business, the Port in 2003 invested $23 million to extend the terminal and add an additional shipping berth.

In addition to vehicles, the Port receives shipments of lumber from the Pacific Northwest at this cargo terminal. And next to the terminal and an integral part of the Working Waterfront is Knight & Carver, a full-service yacht repair facility and a favorite stop for mega-yachts traveling along the West Coast cruising corridor.

An integral part of the region's economic strength, the Working Waterfront consists of vital waterside businesses that contribute billions of dollars to the local economy and generate thousands of good-paying jobs throughout San Diego County.
