New Parking Facility and Public Improvements for America's Cup Harbor Receive Approval by Board of Port Commissioners

The developers of the Marina Green Commercial Site on America's Cup Harbor in Shelter Island received approval for a public parking facility from the Board of Port Commissioners at the October 7 Board meeting. The 424-space parking structure will enable completion of the second phase of the Marina Green project, and will also provide additional parking for neighboring businesses.

Point Loma Marina, LLC, is the developer for the Marina Green project, which was approved by the Board in September 2006. The waterside project entails the construction of three buildings, a 50-slip marina, a 16,000-square-foot park, and a new shoreline promenade.

The first phase of the project is now complete and includes two buildings that will house a restaurant, marine-related offices and marina support facilities. It also includes the marina, park, public promenade, a pedestrian pier and recreational dock and dine facilities.

The second phase will include construction of a 10,000-square foot building, a 13,000-square foot public plaza, the new parking facility and a public walkway which will provide access to the waterfront from the adjacent residential community. The parking facility will provide parking for the Marina Green project plus additional parking to accommodate overflow parking needs for other businesses in the Americas Cup Harbor area.

In a separate, but related item, the Board conducted a public hearing and authorized issuance of a Coastal Development Permit for improvements to North Harbor Drive between Nimitz and Scott Street.

The North Harbor Drive improvement project will reconfigure the frontage road on Harbor Drive that is currently used for parallel parking. Synchronized traffic signals with crosswalks will be installed, along with new landscape improvements, curbs, sidewalks and paving.

Goals of the project include improving pedestrian safety, increasing parking capacity, improving traffic, upgrading the roadway's trees and plantings, and beautifying the area. The City of San Diego will be asked to approve enhancements to a portion of the roadway that is a dedicated city street and lies within the project's area. Completion of the North Harbor Drive improvement project is expected by late spring 2010.
