Port of San Diego "Goes Red" in Support of Women’s Heart Health

The Port of San Diego will light its buildings in red on Friday evening, February 3, 2012, to usher in the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day event, designed to call attention to women's heart health.
The annual event encourages people to wear red to raise awareness about the prevalence of women's heart disease and steps that can be taken to maintain a healthy heart.
Temporary Exhibition of “Unconditional Surrender” Ending Soon

The 25-foot tall sculpture that commemorates the day that World War II ended and has provided the backdrop for thousands of tourists' photos, will soon be leaving the waterfront.
"Unconditional Surrender," an artwork depicting a World War II sailor kissing a nurse, has graced the park at Tuna Harbor, near the Fish Market Restaurant and the USS Midway, since February 2007. The 6,000-pound artwork, created by sculptor Seward Johnson in 2005, will be taken down during the last week of February, 2012.
San Diego’s Ocean Discovery Institute Recognized by White House

A Port of San Diego community partner was celebrated on Tuesday, January 31, for the recognition it received from the White House for its mentoring and education programs in the San Diego region.
The San Diego non-profit Ocean Discovery Institute received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in December.
Plaque Commemorates Birthplace of Naval Aviation

A bronze plaque along the San Diego Bay waterfront in Coronado's Centennial Park now officially marks North Island as the birthplace of naval aviation and commemorates its 100th anniversary, which occurred in 2011.
The marker was unveiled on January 28, 2012, by members of the California State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, sponsors of the commemorative plaque.
Coronado is one of the Port of San Diego's five member cities.
