National Transportation Safety Board Investigates San Diego Bay Boating Accident

An 8-year-old boy died and at least five people were injured Sunday, December 20, 2009 when a U.S. Coast Guard vessel was involved in an accident with a civilian recreational boat during the annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights holiday boating festival.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. off Harbor Island near Tom Ham's Lighthouse. The Harbor Police dispatched two emergency vessels and three police cruisers to assist with rescue efforts. Emergency personnel from the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department treated victims at the scene before transporting them to local hospitals.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

The federal National Transportation Safety Board is taking over the investigation as of Monday, December 21, 2009. All questions and media inquiries relating to the accident are being referred to the NTSB at (202) 314-6100.
