Turtle Tracks - How To Help

How can you help protect Eastern Pacific green sea turtles? Two San Diego-based non-profit organizations are dedicated to their conservation and need your support!

WiLDCOAST

WiLDCOAST, based in Imperial Beach, protects and preserves coastal ecosystems and wildlife in the Californias and Latin America by building grass roots support and establishing protect areas. This organization is led by Dr. Serge Dedina and works on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border to launch media campaigns aimed at improving the public’s awareness of sea turtle issues. Several of their campaigns are focused on eliminating the cultural practice of eating sea turtle meat and eggs, a widespread custom throughout Mexico. WiLDCOAST staff work closely with Mexican media and celebrities to spread awareness of this endangered species. With funding from the Port of San Diego, WiLDCOAST also provides sea turtle education programs to children at schools throughout San Diego County. Please visit the WiLDCOAST website to learn how you can help with their efforts!

Pro Peninsula

Pro Peninsula is a San Diego based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering communities and organizations on the Baja California peninsula to protect and preserve their environment. Pro Peninsula, led by Chris Pesenti and Kama Dean, serves as the coordinating body of the Grupo Tortuguero, a network of individuals, communities, organizations and institutions from around the world dedicated to sea turtle conservation. Specifically, Pro Peninsula and the Grupo Tortuguero work together to mange a multi-site community-based sea turtle monitoring project, promote community-level outreach and education, and organize biannual network meetings. With funding from the Port of San Diego, Pro Peninsula also provides a unique field-based experience called the Endangered Green Sea Turtles of San Diego Bay to sixth grade students from schools near San Diego Bay. These students are given the opportunity to observe researchers from the Marine Turtle Research Program in action as they study San Diego Bay’s sea turtles at the South Bay Power Plant research site. Please visit the Pro Peninsula website to learn how you can help with their efforts!
