Port of San Diego Sponsoring 24th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day
Friday, 12 September 2008
As part of the Port of San Diego's Green Port Program, the Port has partnered with URS Corporation to sponsor a cleanup site at the Chula Vista Wildlife Reserve on Saturday, September 20th, 2008. This small island located in south San Diego Bay was created in the 1970s to provide habitat for San Diego Bay wildlife. This unique area is normally closed to the public because it provides a home for many sensitive species, including the California Least Tern and Osprey. Employees of the Port and URS, along with their friends and families, will volunteer to improve this fragile wetlands habitat by removing trash and debris from the area.

Excerpt from California Coastal Cleanup Day article:
San Diego Coastkeeper and I Love A Clean San Diego, in partnership with the California Coastal Commission, join together each year to cleanup local inland and coastal waterways and beaches in order to prevent marine debris from entering the ocean and to educate Coastal Cleanup Day participants about the importance of pollution prevention. Up to 80 percent of the marine debris on our beaches and oceans comes from a land-based source and that's why we are counting on YOU to clean up your local beaches, bays, canyons, rivers and creek beds to prevent this trash from polluting our ocean.
Anyone interested in volunteering at a cleanup site in their neighborhood as part of Coastal Cleanup Day should visit the California Coastal Cleanup Day webpage to register for a nearby site.
