DSC 0073A Port of San Diego community partner was celebrated on Tuesday, January 31, for the recognition it received from the White House for its mentoring and education programs in the San Diego region.

The San Diego non-profit Ocean Discovery Institute received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in December.

The Port of San Diego honored 49 of its waterfront tenant businesses for their environmental achievements at an awards breakfast on Tuesday, January 24.

The awards ceremony, held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, marks the end of the first year of the Port of San Diego's Green Business Challenge, a joint project between the Port District and San Diego Gas & Electric.

The voluntary program - the first of its kind on the West Coast - is designed to promote business practices that reduce energy consumption, water use and waste, as well as prevent pollution.

GBC-LogoThe Port of San Diego will honor 49 tenant businesses for their environmental achievements at an awards breakfast on Tuesday, January 24.

The awards ceremony marks the end of the first year of the Green Business Challenge, a joint project between the Port District and San Diego Gas & Electric. The voluntary program - the first of its kind on the West Coast - is designed to promote business practices that reduce energy consumption, water use, waste and prevent pollution.

By incorporating "green" practices into their business operations, many of the tenants cut utility costs, lowered water bills, reduced waste and saved money.

The awards breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, 1 Park Boulevard, San Diego. (Map)

flagshipThe start of a major green renovation is being celebrated along San Diego Bay.

Port of San Diego tenant Flagship Cruises & Events, a San Diego Harbor Excursion luxury tour brand, is transitioning its 11-vessel fleet to shore power at a new facility to be built between Broadway Pier and Navy Pier. The $2.5 million project will allow Flagship vessels to plug into on-shore electricity while docked, instead of running their diesel engines – an innovation that is good for air quality.

The Port of San Diego has become the testing ground for an alternative energy research project.The Port of San Diego has become the testing ground for an alternative energy research project.

As part of San Diego Gas & Electric's (SDG&E) efforts to bring new forward-thinking renewable energy technologies to the region, a 30-foot-tall vertical axis wind turbine has been installed on Harbor Island at Harbor Island Park, one of 17 public parks managed by the Port District.
