clubhouse elevationA new club house, 108 new boat slips and additional parking are all part of a proposed Coronado Yacht Club expansion plan that will be considered by the Board of Port Commissioners next month.

The board will hold a public hearing on the expansion proposal at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in the Board Room of the Port's Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego (map).

Following the public hearing, the Board of Port Commissioners will consider approval of a draft Port Master Plan Amendment and a notice of completion that would allow the yacht club's redevelopment project at 1631 Strand Way in Coronado (map).

The notice of completion is a document announcing the completion of the draft Port Master Plan Amendment. The Port Master Plan Amendment is a planning tool that guides future port development and ensures that projects and developments within the port are consistent with the California Coastal Act.

Copies of the draft Port Master Plan Amendment are available for public review at the Port of San Diego's Environmental & Land Use Management Department, located in the port's Administration Building. The public, interested organizations and government agencies are encouraged to submit testimony, statements and evidence relative to the draft Port Master Plan Amendment at the public hearing on September 13, or in writing prior to the hearing. Written information should be submitted to the District Clerk, San Diego Unified Port District, P.O. Box 120488, San Diego, CA 92112-0488. Questions may be directed to Wileen Manaois, Senior Redevelopment Planner, at (619) 686-6282 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The proposed amendment would revise language in the Port Master Plan to describe the reconstruction of the Coronado Yacht Club buildings on the landside. It would also address additional parking, and the reconfiguration and expanded boat slip area. Additionally, the Port Master Plan Amendment would also describe public improvements related to the project that have been constructed as part of the Glorietta Bay Master Plan implementation.

The redevelopment of the project requires the demolition of all of its existing structures. A new clubhouse, enlarged sailing facility, maintenance shop and multi-purpose building will be constructed. It will increase the number of boat slips from 264 to 372. The enlarged sailing facility will enable the Coronado Yacht Club to operate its expanded sailing instruction programs, which are open to both its members and the public, more efficiently.

The final Environmental Impact Report for the project will be presented to the Board of Port Commissioners for certification at its September 13 meeting.

The project is anticipated to go before the California Coastal Commission for certification of the Port Master Plan Amendment in February 2012. If all approvals are met, construction could begin in mid-2012.
