Labels: Press ReleasesNews

The Port of San Diego has prepared a Notice of Preparation (NOP) of a Draft Environmental Impact Report for the proposed expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, a proposed hotel that is part of the project and a Port Master Plan Amendment.

Issuing the NOP gives the public and interested parties an opportunity to comment on environmental impacts of the project. Comments on the expansion and hotel project will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, January 10, 2011. Comments should be mailed to the San Diego Unified Port District, Land Use Planning Department, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101.

They may also be e-mailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

In addition to providing comments by mail and e-mail, the public will have the opportunity to provide input at a scoping meeting for the project's EIR. The scoping meeting will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 6 p.m. in Room 33 of the San Diego Convention Center. The Convention Center is located at 111 West Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101 (map). Free parking for the meeting is available behind the Convention Center on Convention Way. Public parking in the Convention Center garage is also available for $10.

The expansion of the Convention Center would add approximately 225,000 square feet of exhibit halls, 101,500 square feet of meeting rooms, 80,000 square feet of ballroom space, 16,000 square feet of kitchen area and 45,000 square feet of visitor-serving retail. A 35-foot wide pedestrian promenade would be added at ground level, as well as five acres of accessible public space that will be linked to the waterfront promenade. Other amenities include a pedestrian bridge over Harbor Drive and landside improvements to an existing water transportation center, including a ticket booth, offices, public restrooms, bus drop-off and parking.

The proposed hotel, that may include up to 500 rooms, would also include up to 50,000 square feet of banquet/conference rooms, ballrooms, restaurants and retail shops.

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is the applicant for the expansion project and the Port of San Diego will be the lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act for the Environmental Impact Report.

Background information on the expansion project is available on both the Port of San Diego website and the San Diego Convention Center Corporation website: www.visitsandiego.com.
