Historic Photos:

In the 1940s, the South Embarcadero was home to lumber yards and Navy Field, a ball field used by the U.S. Navy. The Star of India was docked there before undergoing restoration. The Port formed the North and South Embarcadero Marina Parks from dredged materials from San Diego Bay, adding more than 20 acres of parkland to the waterfront. This early 1980s photo shows Port development of North and South Embarcadero Marina Parks, the marina, and the Intercontinental Hotel (the first tower of what is now the Marriott.) The adjacent 11-acre site is being prepared for construction of the waterfront convention center. The Port of San Diego paid $165 million cash for construction of the landmark convention center that opened in 1989. The Port also contributed to the City of San Diego’s expansion of the facility, which opened in 2001.
